BERMUDA AND NEW ENGLAND IN SPRING - BERMUDA

Friday 19 May 1995 Bermuda

The limo was on time and as things turned out, we had a clear run through to the airport and it took us less than an hour, so we had plenty of time when we got there. The limo driver, who was as talkative as all buggery turned out to be from Lima, so he told us. We checked in OK, with American Airline this time, and then had some scrambled egg and bacon before boarding the plane. The Americans certainly know all about preparing and cooking tasty bacon – best in the world.

The flight was short and comfortable – another airline which knocks United into a cocked hat and Rab got a kick out of the fact that Charlton Heston was sitting across the aisle from her. She says she recognised his voice when he spoke to the steward.

This doesn't do justice to the colours
It was bright and sunny when we arrived in Bermuda. The sea looked marvellous from our room at the resort hotel where we booked in – a lovely tropical colour and as clear as crystal. Rab had not brought a swimming costume with her so we caught the bus into town to get one for her. That was the last we saw of the sun and although we went down to the beach, she didn’t swim.

Our first impression of Bermuda has been good although it is humid and must be murder in summer when it really heats up. The local people seem very pleasant and cheerful and remind us of Zimbabweans in their apparent outlook. The whole place has a bit of a third world feel to it despite the fact that it is very clear that there is a good deal of wealth around. The hotel is luxurious  (and very expensive at US$373 a night plus 17% service charge + 8% tax – thank goodness for an agreed expenses contribution from my client) but a bit run down. It looked as if it needed a coat of paint and there was a deal of rust around.

There was a long fax waiting for us from Matt who seemed very positive. He has taken a number of decisions about his future – moving forward again as he has done a number of times when we have been away on trips. (A good example of how communication has changed. There would be no question of being in touch 24/7 today if that was desired.)

I managed to get a swim in

We had dinner at the hotel on a terrace overlooking the bay and had the opportunity of sampling the local cuisine at a fish smorgasbord. We both felt that the mussel pie took first prize it was hot and spicy and delicious. That and the fish chowder and a broiled, barbecued fish were all excellent. We bought a couple of recipe books to see if we can replicate the dishes in  due course. (Like the contact addresses exchanged with fellow travellers, recipe books bought in foreign lands are rarely consulted at home.)
